Did you know that September 30th is International Translation Day? Since 1953, this holiday has been celebrated annually. Here are a few facts about International Translation Day and it’s importance:

 

What is International Translation Day?

International Translation Day is a day for interpreters, translators, and everyone to celebrate the importance of connecting people around the world through translation. The International Federation of Translators (FIT) determines a theme for the celebration each year. Previous year’s themes have been, “The Changing Face of Translation and Interpreting”, “Connecting Worlds”, and “Language Rights: Essential to all Humans.” The theme always references something about the importance to connecting humans to each other around the globe.

When is the holiday celebrated?

International Translation Day is celebrated on September 30th each year, during the Feast of St. Jerome.

Who is St. Jerome?

St. Jerome is considered the ‘patron saint of translators’ and is known for his translation of the Bible in Latin. St. Jerome was born in 374 AD in Dalmatia, and died in 384 AD. He was a Christian theologian, priest, and historian.

What is the theme for 2017?

This year’s theme is “Translation and Diversity.” This references the importance of preserving the diversity of cultures through their language. Due to our ever increasingly globalized world, it is vital to preserve culture when translating and interpreting.
