08 Sep Cultural Immersion Tips
Whether traveling for business or leisure, cultural immersion is important to get the most out of an international experience. Many people only skim the top of potential cultural experiences when traveling internationally because they don’t make an effort to immerse themselves in a new culture. Below are a couple of tips that can help:
Research Etiquette Beforehand
Before traveling to another country, research the etiquette of that country beforehand. Some normal things in one culture can be completely offensive in another. Knowing cultural etiquette can help you feel more comfortable getting out and interacting with others in that country.
Be open to differences about cultures, keep an open mind and be adaptable to change. Also avoid negative comparisons between where you are from and the country you are in. Focus on the positive aspects of that culture.
Do As The Locals Do
Go where the locals go, eat what the locals eat and do as the locals do. Instead of hitting all of the touristy sites, go to locals favorite places. Don’t be afraid to ask around to find out where these places are.
Practice Language Skills
Don’t be afraid to make mistakes, practice the language with native speakers. Practicing language skills with native speakers is the best and quickest way to learn a language. Native speakers generally love to help and speak the language with you. They appreciate others making the effort to speak the local language.
